Search Engine Marketing Tips

If you're new to search engine marketing, here are the top ten tips to consider before launching your online campaigns.

1. Content and credibility

Make sure your website's content is of a high standard before launching search engine marketing initiatives. Poorly designed websites with informative and uninspiring content will result in low sales conversion rates. Your website must have an impact, it must look professional and it must show credibility.

2. Think a lot about keyword search

Search engine marketing is about keywords. Selecting the wrong keywords can be a costly mistake. Don't assume you know the keywords that people are likely to enter into Google and other search engines in order to find your particular products or services. Use Wordtracker, or a similar professional keyword tool, to find out both what people are looking for and how many other websites are competing on these terms.

3. Pay attention to your landing pages

Don't focus on the home page of your website. If you're setting up a PPC (Pay-Per-Click) campaign, it's essential that your ad refers to a page relevant to a specific web search. So, for example, if you're advertising 30-inch TVs, make sure your landing page contains about 30-inch TVs. A user who accesses a more generic page will leave your site if they can't find what they're looking for in two clicks.

4. Use PPC to launch your website

You won't be able to instantly get "organic" (free) ads on Google, Yahoo, and other search engines. Although SEO (search engine optimization) needs to be taken into account early in your website business planning, it will take time to get results. Setting up PPC campaigns, monitoring them closely, and analyzing keywords that most effectively convert to sales will help you determine which keywords you should target for your SEO efforts.

5. Be informative and clear with your META and your ad copy

When optimizing your landing pages, be sure to use clear and informative language. Don't stick your META title and description tags full of keywords. Every landing page on your site should be optimized for search engines on a key term. With your PPC campaigns, be sure to use the exact key phrase in your ad copy, otherwise, your clickthrough rate will suffer and the cost of your ads will increase.

6. Use Web Analytics to improve your pages

Be sure to install analytics software on your site to analyze critical information such as page bounce rates and the average time spent surfing your site. High bounce rates mean that the content on your landing page is not relevant to the web searcher. If you have a bounce rate of more than 60%, there is a problem with your content that needs to be resolved.

7. Set up conversion tracking and set your campaign statistics

It's important to know what your goal is to drive traffic to your site. Whether it's online sales, newsletter registrations or requests via the contact form; Make sure the right code is installed on your site to track your responses and, more importantly, what keywords have created the answer. Set a budget and some campaign settings. If you spend too much on keywords that give little or no answer, redefine your keyword strategy.
